- Become skilled at working together to solve problems and design projects.
Shape It, Sculpt It! & Amusement Park Science { one week }
Shape It, Sculpt It! ::: The Sculpture Garden
You’ve discovered an abandoned sculpture garden, and a close look reveals some interesting art. You’re inspired to re-create some of the best pieces, so the sculpture garden can be vibrant once again! Learn to use armature and make an Alberto Giacometti-inspired statue. Study San Francisco artist Ruth Asawa, and create a wire sculpture based on her work. You’ll also craft a Greek vase and experiment with reductive sculpture techniques.
Amusement Park Science ::: Roller Coasters
Camp Galileo’s amusement park is sporting a new sign boasting the “Top Coasters in the Country”. There’s only one problem: the coasters aren’t built yet! Unless you design some awesome new rides, thousands of kids are sure to be disappointed. Put on your most creative thinking cap and work in teams to design coasters with the highest hills, fastest turns, most loops and longest tunnels! Deepen your understanding of electricity, potential and kinetic energy and Newton’s Laws of Motion.
Supernova Outdoor Program ::: Master Voyagers
Campers participate in our outdoor curriculum every day. Participate daily in team-building games, craft activities and traditional Camp Galileo outdoor fun! Combine sportsmanship with wild and crazy fun by playing all-camp games or working with your teammates to pass objects around a circle without using your hands. Energize with relay races, or get the creative juices flowing with Klutz activities like face painting, origami and building a solar car.
Psychedelic ‘60s & Space Explorers { one week }
Psychedelic ‘60s ::: My Rock ‘n Roll Band
Gather your friends and tune in, because it’s time to rock ‘n roll ‘60s style! Create your own instrument and paint it with bright psychedelic designs. Learn techniques for print-making, and use them to design a poster that advertises your band. Decorate your stage with a Romare Bearden-inspired photomontage and a Roy Lichtenstein cartoon-type drawing. Tie-dye your concert t-shirt and get ready to rock out!
Space Explorers ::: Rocket Science
Create your own space mission with your team of Supernova rocket scientists. Throughout the week, you’ll explore the physics of flight and propulsion, and design aerodynamic fins for different rocket types. All your experiments will culminate in the development of a final rocket design, which you’ll enter into the Camp Galileo Water Rocket Olympics. Find out which design goes the highest and farthest, which best survives the landing and which rocket has the coolest crash!

Ancient Egypt & Crime Solver Scientists { one week }
Ancient Egypt ::: King Tut’s Tomb
Enter the mysterious world of King Tut’s Tomb, and create some of the artifacts within. You’ll design a life-sized version of yourself for the top of an Egyptian mummy case, just like Egyptian royalty. You’ll also learn about hieroglyphics and carve a personal message on your own clay cartouche, plus make a wall painting that tells your life story. Top off the week by designing an Egyptian amulet from gold foil and beads, using a low relief technique.
Crime Solver Scientists ::: Recovering the Rosetta Stone
The Rosetta Stone, an ancient artifact used to help understand hieroglyphic writing, was stolen from the British Museum. The International Police have asked you to figure out who stole it, and how to get it back before the thieves disappear. Your first step will be to construct a crime lab at camp. There you will explore chromatography and mock blood typing, learn about optics, use microscopes to examine evidence and analyze fibers using a flame test (adult supervised). Along the way you’ll also build a device to separate evidence without contaminating it and crack multiple coded messages.
